Some concertgoers may remember Ib Lanzky-Otto. Born in Denmark in 1940, he was a member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic’s horn section from 1961 to 2007 – serving as principal horn from 1967 until his retirement. Ib Lanzky-Otto passed away five years ago.
He also enjoyed an international career as a soloist across Europe and the United States – recognised as one of the world’s leading horn players. This tribute concert features music written specifically for him as well as works he often performed. The second half of the programme also highlights the humour and light-heartedness that were so much a part of Ib Lanzky-Otto’s personality.
Additional guest musicians will take part, invited by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic’s horn section. Hommage à Ib Lanzky-Otto is a vibrant celebration of a musician whose remarkable artistry and career can hardly be overstated.

The elegant and virtuosic piano part was written for his wife, Clara, and the slow movement offers what may be one of the most beautiful melodies in all of musical Romanticism.
Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz (1909–69) was both celebrated and exceptionally successful as a female composer during her lifetime. She graduated in both violin and composition from the Warsaw Conservatory and was also a highly skilled pianist. Like her rhythmically charged piano concerto, her second Piano Quintet is expressive, powerful and virtuosic.
Krzysztof Penderecki (1933–2020), another of Poland’s most prominent composers, gained international fame outside classical circles after his music was featured in films such as The Exorcist, The Shining, Wild at Heart and Shutter Island. He was also the focus of Konserthuset’s Composer Festival in 1993.
Penderecki’s Quartet for Clarinet and String Trio was written as a response to Schubert’s String Quintet – though it perhaps bears more resemblance to the world of Shostakovich. The piece is dedicated to Åke Holmquist, who served as director of Konserthuset Stockholm from 1986 to 1999 and was the initiator of the Composer Festival, which has been held annually since 1986.

In this concert, she is joined by pianist Martin Sturfält to highlight music for cello by four English composers.
The youngest among them is Cheryl Frances-Hoad, born in 1980, who herself studied cello at the renowned Yehudi Menuhin School in England and has composed a number of works for the instrument – including a widely acclaimed cello concerto. Her music has been described as both sparkling and volcanically intense, and here, Marie Macleod performs a suite for solo cello.
It is framed by Frank Bridge’s expressive Sonata for Cello and Piano and Benjamin Britten’s sonata, written for Mstislav Rostropovich and brimming with inventive ideas, vibrant pizzicatos and lyrical intensity. The concert concludes with one of Edward Elgar’s most beloved and frequently performed works, Salut d’amour – originally written for violin and piano but perfectly suited to the cello.

Perhaps that is why it speaks so powerfully to us, with its warmth, imagination and intensity. One of the works from Beethoven’s late period, the quartet spans seven movements and covers an extraordinary emotional range. Franz Schubert heard the piece and is said to have wondered what was left to write after music of such magnitude – a greatness that could not be put into words.
Composer Ethel Smyth stood out in Victorian England, and like Beethoven, she was a strong and uncompromising personality. Openly lesbian, she was a leading figure in the women’s suffrage movement. In 1922, she became the first female composer to be knighted. Her music is often warmly passionate, as in this slow movement for string quartet.
Between Smyth and Beethoven, we hear a quartet by Julius Röntgen – a German-Dutch composer and pianist who was married to Swedish composer and violinist Amanda Maier-Röntgen, known especially for her outstanding violin concerto. Röntgen’s quartet in A minor is a romantic and at times idyllic work.
The music is performed by the Maier Quartet, comprising members of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. The quartet is named after Amanda Maier-Röntgen, and its members are violinists Johannes Lörstad and Patrik Swedrup, violist Arne Stenlund and cellist Klas Gagge.

It’s a space where members of the orchestra come together to perform their own favourite programmes – shaped by curiosity and filled with musical discoveries from both past and present.
Here, they highlight composer Bo Linde from Gävle, whose lyrical and spirited music gained wide attention during the 1950s and 60s. His Violin Concerto is perhaps his most well-known work, combining a dreamlike atmosphere with outward energy and drama – qualities also found in his Divertimento for flute, cello and piano. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic’s principal flutist Andreas Alin is joined by cellist Josef Alin and pianist Peter Friis Johansson, who in 2024 released an album featuring the music of Linde.
The concert opens with the Sonata for Flute and Piano by French composer Mel Bonis, written in the early 1900s – a work of poetic feeling and late-Romantic colour. The same could be said of Alfred Schnittke’s stylistically multifaceted music. In this masterful piano quintet, shifting moods flow seamlessly from darkness to light, and at times a touch of wry humour appears in the form of an awkward waltz.
